Does Rising Damp occur in Summer?

Updated: Aug 29, 2019

What Is Rising Damp?

Rising damp is the result of water that comes from the ground rising up the bricks and mortar of a building. Water goes up the porous wall, rather like a sponge dipped in the bath.

Having effective central heating is important to combat rising damp. Bear this in mind, and take a look at our sister company's heating installation services to help protect and warm your property.

But can rising damp appear in hotter months?

Does Rising Damp Occur In The Summer?

Rising damp does tend to occur more in the winter due to seasonal effects. When the water rises in the winter from rains, rising damp is more prevalent. In the summer, it falls as it usually dries out and less moisture can be soaked up. Drier months make for drier walls all around.

What Causes Rising Damp?

It's caused by the moisture on the ground rising into the walls of a building. Construction materials mostly contain little pores, which suck the water from rain on the ground, and it rises through a wall this way. It's a well-known issue in older homes, especially. Most homes have a rising damp barrier, but deterioration or damage to this barrier, or people not having a barrier in the first place, can cause even more damp than anything else.

How Much Is Damp Treatment?

Treating rising damp can take three to four days, and the average cost of treatment costs £2,500 depending on the size of the house and the length of the job. The best thing that you can do is get a quote from a reputable company and budget accordingly for the rising damp in your home to be fixed properly.
